LARRY - is young (ish), and has been an avid gamer for many years. His
collection of miniature figures is, well... huge, with armies, units and
models of virtually every description. He games in both historical and
fantasy with some sci-fi. He also has a very large collection of board
games and computer games. He is married, with no kids (his wife says he
is child enough for her!). His hobby takes up much of his time and
mental efforts. He will never get around to painting all the tabletop
gaming stuff he buys -- this is physically impossible, although he will never
admit it, or perhaps, may not even be aware of this fact. Larry is easy
going, patient, and rarely looses his cool -- he lets his friends do most of
the fussing and fretting. In short, Larry is your typical gamer and will
probably remind you of someone you know (perhaps he will even remind you of
yourself). |
BILL - He has a very extensive collection of miniatures, although most of these are historicals.
He was in rehab for his overindulgence in the hobby [yeah, like THAT ever happens!]. He is, at least currently,
married with two teenagers.
BRIAN - Brian is one of those annoying "hangers-on"
which seen to populate any such club and hobby. They seldom contribute
to the well being of the organization (other than club dues if they can't
avoid it!). Brian, in particular, is the egotistical sort. He complains
about any situation he can not directly benefit. Sorry, readers, but even
in a great hobby like ours, you still have had to deal with these types
and thus in Larry's World, we must also. |
CINDY - Cindy is Larry's Wife's closest friend.
She is generally confused and bewildered by Larry's hobby. Which, of course,
puts herein the majority with most women; spouses or not.
DAN - Dan is the resident terrain expert. The
"Martha Stewart" of the
scratch-built set, his even temperament makes him a favorite around the tabletop.
DAVE - Current club president (for life, if the
G.A.W.S Club is anything like other gaming
clubs we know!) He won the last club election
by a landslide -- he was the only person running for the position.
Dave likes complicated, large rule sets; the thicker the better,
he says.
EDWARD - Long time club member, Edward is an
"old time" gamer. That is to say,
give him a beautifully terrained table, a good scenario, good
players, and perhaps a brandy at games-end, and he is happy. It is
rumored that he introduced Donald Featherstone to the hobby back in
1955, but it could have been the brandy talking.
GEORGE - George is a club member like many you
might know, who enjoys the competition aspect of the hobby but, do not
contribute. Yes,they show up most sessions. Yes they pay the fees. But
do not host,do not create collections; choosing others efforts for their
use. George, in particular, tends to find his own enjoyment from these
games with little regard for the others in the game. Most clubs are unfortunately
burdened with such individuals. |
JIM - He constitutes the business end of the hobby.
Whether it is those individuals who strive to make a profit by means of
a good product to better the hobby, or those who find a crazed, captive
market for their own use, Jim is the embodiment of both these types.
JOHN A. - Not to be confused with John B; most
large clubs have many similarly named individuals; the G.A.W.S. Club is
no exception. One of Larry's close gaming buddies, his mild manner is
a nice trait.
JOHN B.- Is an individual entirely focused on
gaming. He games five nights a week. He even had a new child. But even
that event is not as important as his hobby. Not an altogether undesirable
trait mind you!
LES - Les is a good guy to have in a club. He is dedicated, has a wonderfully painted
miniatures collection, with some really nice terrain, and he plays the same games that people played a few years back
(usually the same games he played in college or university). The odd thing is that no one in the club knows what Les does for a
living, or where he even lives for that matter. Les just shows up, puts on a game, or plays in a game, then leaves. He
may be back next week, or gone for a few months, even a full year, but he always shows up again. No one ever asks, "So where
have you been?"; they are just glad to see him and his miniatures again. |
MITCH - Mitch is a club member who pours his
heart into the hobby, demanding, but often
ignoring, its relaxing, non-monetary aspects.
RAY - He is typical (?) of your fanatical board
gamer. Nothing; no train, sleet or divorce, will keep him from his appointed
game. He is currently playing in a WWII platoon level, Stalingrad campaign
game for the last seven years. |
ROB - The former Club president. Rob vacated the
position and was replaced during a heated election by Dave. Rob is "hard-core."
That is to say, he does not consider anyone who is without total effort
on the hobby, a true gamer. It is said he once sold free tickets to the
Super Bowl he had won, just to buy an extra 7,000 points of Tyranid Termagants. |
SANDY - Sandy is one of many girls in Larry's
Club. She upbeat, fun and full of energy for the hobby. She likes fast
action, bloody, Fantasy or Sci-Fi skirmish style miniatures games. He favorite game at this
time is of her own creation: Orc Kill, where players score points for
inflicting blood loss and broken bones on their opponents. She will be
appearing in many future comic strips.
SANTA - For Larry, the fat man just can not bring
enough minis to the Leadhead household. He usually appears in in the strip around December (No surprise there).
STAN - Another of the young married gents of the
club. He is careful not to disclose the exact
costs given to the hobby, in case his wife should find out. We don't hide these details from the females
of our lives, do we? |
STAN'S WIFE - Frustrated by what she thinks is
a frivolous waste of time. (boy, how right ... we mean... wrong, she is)
While Larry's wife is understanding, Stan's wife is the exact opposite. We find all spouses
tend to be in one camp or the other.
STEVEN - Larry's best buddy (side-kick) is Steven. He is
just a big guy with a good heart who loves
the hobby and is totally dedicated to it -- for life. His cminiatures collection is almost as vast as Larry's.
He collects anything and everything from Fantasy and Sci-Fi all the way to historicals and back. Like Larry,
Steven probably hasn't a clue to the amount of miniatures he actually owns. All he knows is that he never has enough.
TED - Almost all clubs have a character like Ted.
He is not a team player; Ted exists for only Ted. He complains about everything,
comes up with endless suggestions on how to improve the club, but
rarely helps out, unless he can benefit directly, of course. This sort of
person will often have his own business on the side, such painting miniatures,
but even though the club provides him with a pre-made clientele, he still
cannot see the need to work with the club. In most cases he plays
within his own little gaming circle of friends, venturing out once in
a while when he needs more clients for his business or to show off his
latest miniatures collection. |
THE WIFE - Larry's sometimes exasperated, but
loving partner. We think even she is
sometimes surprised by her acceptance of her husband's,
shall we say, idiosyncrasies which go hand-in-hand with this
hobby. With quick, rapier wit, she creates the juxtaposition for
Larry's obsession.
TIM - We are not sure which Tim enjoys more,
food or gaming. Nevertheless both rule his world.
TONY - One of the many members of the club, he
is the "every man's gamer". That
is to say, unwilling to face reality, obsessed and focused
on the hobby. Just like you, right?
TRAVIS - Is the clerk at the hobby store. Much
like the proverbial bartender, he sees the
"true underside" of the gamer's heart. (OK,OK, Hemingway we
ain't.)
